Introducing the Pathways Through Diabetes program
(Stanford University Diabetes Self Management Program (DSMP))

Diabetes is fast becoming a disease that affects many people in all age groups and this greatly affects the way we live. There are many therapies and much help for people with diabetes and these all provide much needed solutions to the major problems diabetics have to face every day. There are many other problems these people face everyday for which there are no general remedies, some of these are the emotional issues that trouble people, not fully understanding the complexity of the disease, knowing just what to eat and when, exercise - should I and if so how much and just what do those food labels show me.
There is so much else that can be done by ourselves to enable us to live as normal a life as possible and this is know as “self management or self care” and our knowledge of these concepts can be greatly improved by attending a course such as Pathways Through Diabetes. The course runs over six weeks (approx 2.5hrs per session) and covers a multitude of topics such as.

Monitoring

Nutrition / healthy eating

Preventing complications

Stress management

Fitness / exercise, how much and when

Relaxation techniques

Preventing low blood sugar

Skin and foot care

And many others

This course is not intended to replace anything that you already do, rather it is designed to complement it by giving you simple to understand facts and concepts relating to diabetes. It is not a health lecture, it is very interactive, participants help each other in many ways  so by taking part you will not only learn yourself but will help others learn from you. It is a very social course, we want you to feel comfortable so you are free to move around at any time. We will be running this course in the near future at our centre in the Whyalla Hospital - if you would like more information please contact us via our contact page on this website or by visiting our centre anytime.
