How Health In Our Hands works
The centre first opened in 2002 as part of a federal health dept. project called Sharing Health Care. When the project finished in 2004 the centre continued as an incorporated community organisation, run and managed by volunteers. Originally the centre was located in a shop at a small shopping area but in 2008 relocated to the hospital in Whyalla. In its new location the centre has continued to thrive, providing the community with the same range of programs plus starting many new ones. The volunteers provide many services at the centre and include, (see our mission statement)

Health In Our Hands is an independent community owned and community operated organisation run entirely by volunteers. The centre operates in the Whyalla hospital precinct and provides its clients with a range of activities that compliment those provided by the acute and allied health services of the Whyalla Hospital. These activities include Tai Chi, Exercise and peer led lifestyle programs such as the Moving Toward Wellness Course. The centre is open 5 days per week from 10.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday. (closed public holidays).
Volunteering at the Centre
The centre is run and managed entirely by volunteers from all walks of life, the common ideal being a desire to help the community to live a healthy life. To enable this to happen our volunteers are offered a variety of training in keeping with their wishes and time commitment to the centre. Some volunteers are quite happy to help with the day to day running of the centre while others become involved in other aspects of the centre, the decision is theirs, the centre is pleased to accept whatever time is offered.
If you feel you would like to volunteer some of your time to the centre you will be most welcome, all you have to do is phone, email, use the contact form on this site, or better still come in and see us, we will do the rest.
Positions currently available at the centre for volunteers.
We have positions for people who have some basic office and or customer skills.
There are positions for people who have some teaching / instruction skills, Peer Leader training will be given to enhance those skills
All our volunteers are required to undergo a police check (at our expense) and sign a confidentiality document.
If you would like more information please contact us at our centre in person, by phone (08 86488463) or via the contact page on this website.
